Police arrested three people, two men and a woman, over a large indoor cannabis grow in the basement of a villa in Alhaurín de la Torre, near Málaga, in September 2026.

Officers seized about 3,000 plants and roughly 70 kilograms of cannabis buds and hash pollen. They also found anabolic substances and cash. The grow was powered by an illegal connection to the public electricity grid. According to the report, police were tipped off by a strong cannabis smell and unusually high power use.

The three were taken before the duty court in Málaga, which ordered them held in provisional prison while the case continues. The report does not name them or give their nationality. The charges are allegations, and no conviction has been reported.

Why it matters: Here, the smell and the unusually high electricity use were what led police to the villa.
