Police in the Gyeongbuk region of South Korea announced in July 2026 that they had caught 63 people in online drug cases, and that eight were taken into custody.
In one case, police say a group grew cannabis in an apartment using seeds and lighting brought in from Canada, and sold it across the country over the dark web. Of that group, 32 were caught and two were detained.
In a second case, a group allegedly brought methamphetamine and cannabis in from Thailand and the United States and sold it over Telegram. Thirty-one people were caught and six were detained. Police seized about 950 grams of methamphetamine and 1.6 kilograms of cannabis, valued at around 3.4 billion won. About 60 million won in alleged proceeds was frozen before indictment.
One suspect is identified only as "A." The people are accused, not convicted, and this was a mixed drug case in which cannabis was only part of the total.
Why it matters: South Korean police are targeting online sales and deliveries, including through messaging apps.
