Three U.S. Citizens Held in Paraguay After About 261 kg of Marijuana Found Near a Private Jet

Prosecutors charged them with international drug trafficking. A judge cited their lack of ties to Paraguay.

A private jet from Miami via Panama City landed at Silvio Pettirossi airport near Asunción on 29 May 2026. About 261.6 kg of vacuum-sealed, high-THC marijuana was found after staff raised the alarm about bags being removed from a hangar.

Prosecutors charged three US citizens, named in the report as David Thomas Wise, Troy Anthony Vasquez and Marisol Rivas, as printed in the source, with international drug trafficking and unauthorised possession under Law 1340. A judge ordered pretrial detention for the three, reportedly because they have no ties to Paraguay. The young co-pilot was excluded from the case after cooperating, and the pilot had already left the country. The men were sent to the Centro Nacional de Prevenidos and the woman to Emboscada prison.

Why it matters: The judge reportedly ordered detention because of the defendants' lack of ties to Paraguay, and the co-pilot was excluded from the case after cooperating. None of the three has been tried.
