Nevada: Governor Vetoes Bill That Would Have Sealed Low-Level Cannabis Records Automatically (2023)

Gov. Joe Lombardo vetoed AB 160 on June 16, 2023, the Nevada Independent reported. The bill would have let the state flag people eligible to have low-level, mostly cannabis, records sealed automatically. Prosecutors would have had 30 days to object, with an objection triggering a hearing.

Lombardo said sealing should be a judicial privilege tied to showing rehabilitation. Clark County planned to bring recommendations back, including a $1 million appropriation for a task force on automatic sealing. The bill built on the 2019 Nevada Second Chance Act (AB 192).

Why it matters: Without automatic sealing, people with old low-level cannabis records have to go through a court process to clear them.
