Juvani Swartbooi, a Keetmanshoop resident, was convicted of dealing in cannabis in the Lüderitz Magistrate's Court after pleading guilty, according to The Namibian. He was found with 241 grams of dagga, valued at about N$2,500, in Lüderitz in February 2020.

He was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment in April 2021 and has appealed the conviction and sentence. He also asked the High Court to declare the dealing provision of the 1971 drugs Act unconstitutional. Deputy Judge President Hannelie Prinsloo dismissed the application, finding "nothing compelling" in his case. The appeal is still pending.

Why it matters: The case turns on 241 grams worth about N$2,500, and a prison term followed. The challenge to the law has failed for now.
