A 30-year-old man from Zomba District was found with about 124 kg of cannabis hidden in a vehicle at the Sharpvalle checkpoint, according to Nyasa Times carried by AllAfrica. The report names him as Brave Phiri.

He pleaded guilty in Ntcheu Magistrate's Court and was sentenced to a fine of K10 million or three years in prison. He had not paid the fine when the report was published. A police spokesperson and a state prosecutor are quoted.

Why it matters: The fine-or-jail structure means a person who cannot pay serves time. K10 million is far beyond most Malawians' means.
