Kansas: Cannabis Remains Fully Illegal as Man Serving 142 Months Is Denied Clemency (2024)

The magazine says intent to distribute can carry a 5.5-year mandatory term, reportedly even near 25 grams.

Cannabis remains fully illegal in Kansas, a Schedule I substance, Kansas City Magazine reported in May 2024. Antonio Wyatt, stopped on I-70 in 2017 with about eight pounds, received 142 months and was still in prison; the Prisoner Review Board denied clemency in late 2023.

The article says intent to distribute can be a level 4 felony with a 5.5-year mandatory term, reportedly even near 25 grams. It also says SB 366 (2022) expungement is slow and not cannabis-specific.

Why it matters: Eight pounds is above the small-scale cases we usually lead with. The article is included for what it says about how severe Kansas law is for much smaller amounts.
