A 53-year-old Australian woman was arrested in May 2026 at a rented house on the Indonesian island of Lombok, according to an AFP report.
Police say they found 59 milliliters of vape liquid containing cannabis after learning that she had received a delivery of it. She told authorities she used it for knee pain and depression. A narcotics officer said the case would be handled as a crime and that narcotics may not be possessed, used or traded in Indonesia.
The report states that the maximum possible penalty if convicted is 20 years in prison and a fine of 2 billion rupiah. The case is under investigation, and the report does not say whether formal charges have been filed. She is not named.
Why it matters: Medical use of cannabis in another country does not carry over to Indonesia. Police treated a small amount of vape liquid as a criminal matter.
