A Cairo criminal court sentenced a hotel employee and a Brazilian woman staying at the hotel to three years each, with hard labor. Egypt Independent reported the case in May 2026, based on reporting by the Egyptian outlet Youm7.
According to the report, the employee bought hashish and the guest baked it into a cake in the hotel kitchen. The cake was then served as a prank to a Chinese tourist, who ate part of it.
The report does not name either defendant, give dates for the incident or arrests, or say which hotel was involved. It describes a trial-level conviction and does not mention an appeal.
The case involves one Egyptian and one foreign national, and no U.S. citizen.
Why it matters: In this case, both the person who supplied the hashish and the guest who baked it were sentenced.
