At a March 2023 hearing, Chief State's Attorney Patrick Griffin said some pre-2021 possession cases remain pending and were not dismissed, CT Mirror reported. The total is unknown because drug offenses share statutes. A legislator noted a possession charge can be tied to probation violations and family court custody disputes.
Bill 6787 would require prosecutors to review pending marijuana charges and courts to hold hearings for people incarcerated for such conduct. Last Prisoner Project's executive director cited national figures; no Connecticut count was given.
Why it matters: Even after legalization, old charges can still hang over people, and no one could say how many. We have not checked whether the bill passed.
