California: State Report Says 214,079 of 227,650 Flagged Cannabis Convictions Have Been Cleared (2024)

About 13,571 cases were still eligible for relief as of January 2024, the Attorney General's office reported.

California's Department of Justice reported on March 1, 2024, with data current to January 2, 2024, that 227,650 past cannabis convictions were identified in July 2019 as potentially eligible for relief under Proposition 64. By January 2, 2024, 214,079 had been recalled, dismissed, resentenced, sealed or redesignated, leaving 13,571 still eligible, about a 94 percent reduction.

About 12,807 individuals remained potentially eligible, versus 180,835 in 2019. AB 1706 set a court deadline of March 1, 2023 and a database update deadline of July 1, 2023. Los Angeles County had the most challenged cases, 1,904.

Why it matters: California's record-clearing is far along but not finished, and the report says nothing about people who were never flagged.
