Arkansas: Cannabis Trade Group Planned to Seek Expungement for Non-Violent Possession (2022)

No bill had been drafted, and a state senator said shorter jail terms were unlikely to gain traction.

The Arkansas Cannabis Industry Association planned to pursue restorative justice legislation in 2023, Talk Business & Politics reported in November 2022. The proposal would seek expungement of records for non-violent marijuana possession offenses and possibly change jail sentences.

No bill had been drafted at the time. Issue 4 on the November 2022 ballot would have legalized adult-use cannabis for people 21 and older, with up to one ounce. The group acknowledged low odds, and a state senator said reducing jail terms was unlikely to gain traction.

Why it matters: This is a plan, not a law. We have not confirmed what happened in the 2023 session, so readers should not assume relief exists.
